Catching Up with Tattoo Age: Thom DeVita (and a Valerie Vargas/Lal Hardy Bonus)

It has been a little while since we checked in with the good people at Vice and enjoyed one of their Tattoo Age documentaries. Earlier this week, they dropped the first part of their five(!)-part series on Thom DeVita.
Check it out here:

Before this segment was released, the good folks over at Vice gave us a little bonus footage from their Valerie Vargas episodes, which appeared earlier this fall. In this short clip,Valerie and Stewart Robson visit with British tattooing legend Lal Hardy. Here's the clip:

I'm looking forward to more on the DeVita series in weeks to come!

Preview: Thom DeVita on Vice's Tattoo Age Coming Soon!

Vice has released a trailer for their third installment of this, their second season of Tattoo Age.

Featured is tattoo legend Thom DeVita:

This looks to be a different episode than those that have aired in the past.

We are told this is a longer feature broken up into five parts (rather than the normal three).

From Vice:

"[It's] the epic story of Thom DeVita through a series of "inter-visits." We find out about how Thom began tattooing in New York City in the late 60s when the practice was illegal, and hear from Don Ed Hardy, Nick Bubash, Scott Harrison, John Wyatt, Angelo Scotto, Bubba Reeves, and Robert Ryan, among others. This will be one of the more in-depth documentaries released by Tattoo Age and VICE as a whole."

The only bad thing is we have to wait until November 21st for the first installment. We'll post here on Tattoosday when part 1 goes live.

Part 3 of Tattoo Age's Profile of Mutsuo is Up!

I've been really enjoying the current profile of the Japanese tattoo artist Mutsuo, of which the third and concluding part has just gone live on Vice's Tattoo Age series.

Behold:

There is a certain Zen quality to this last installment, as Mutsuo visits a Buddhist/Shinto shrine, and talks a little about the acceptance (or lack thereof) of tattoos in Japanese society. You can also click the "Tattoo Age" tag at the bottom of this post to see previous entries.

Mutsuo on Vice's Tattoo Age (Part 2) - Video Up Today!

I know, it's been a long week since we were treated to part one of Vice's Tattoo Age episode introducing us to Japanese artist Mutsuo.

The middle segment is now live:

The good people at Vice tell us "In Part 2, Tattoo Age delves into the history of Mutsuo's shop, Three Tides Tattoo, and hears from Chris Garver, Masa Sakamoto, and more, as they give us insight into how western-style tattooing gained ground in Japan after the 1999 Tokyo Convention."

Now we just have to wait another week for more Mutsuo. As always, this series continues to impress!

Tattoo Age on Vice - Episode 2, Part 1 - Mutsuo

I really want to recommend the Tattoo Age series on Vice. The truth is, I ignored it last year because two of my favorite tattoo sites announced when new installments appeared, so I didn't want to seem to be copying them. This mindset was a bit of a disservice to any readers who did not frequent those other sites as well.

I just watched the first installment of the second featured artists this season on Tattoo Age, and it's just so well-done, I can't say enough.

The featured artist is the Japanese tattooist Mutsuo, who works out of Three Tides Tattoo in Osaka, Japan.
Do yourself a favor and watch:

Vice Concludes Valerie Vargas Segment on Tattoo Age

The third and final installment of Vice's Tattoo Age is up:

This concluding segment was really cool. There's less tattooing and more about the relationship between Valerie and Stewart Robson. You see them hanging at the zoo and it's really interesting to see them and their reaction to some of the animals.

This is definitely a great series!

Tattoo Age, Season Two, is Coming!

Loyal readers who don't read any other tattoo blogs, I apologize, I may have let you down.

There is a great on-line tattoo feature from a site called VICE that produces a fantastic tattoo series called Tattoo Age.

They told me about it last year but, because I was more involved with my man-on-the-street posts, and because my good friends over at Needles & Sins posted about it, I made a mental note, but didn't talk much about it here on Tattoosday.

But we're evolving here, and as there may be readers who don't read Needles & Sins, I would be remiss in not plugging this great series that, in its first season, highlighted the work of such amazing artists like Freddy Corbin, Mike Rubendall (of Kings Avenue Tattoo), Troy Denning and Grime.

Season Two is upon us, and they will be featuring Valerie Vargas, from the UK, Mutsuo from Japan, and New York City's Thom DeVita. Each artist's spotlight is broken into three parts and, if season one is any indication, highlights their talents and skills in a great documentary style.

For a sneak peak at the upcoming season, here's a taste:

What's nice about this series, among other things, is that they are devoid of faux-reality drama. It's just about tattooing, and by very talented folks, to boot.

We here at Tattoosday will do our best to keep readers updated as to when new episodes appear online.

Enjoy!
